I lived across the road from Parihaka for a couple of years. I have always been fascinated by the story of Te Whiti and the passive resistance movement he started years before Ghandi was even dreamed of! Then I found this story in the School Journal.

This is the link to the story. |

This story, set at Parihaka just prior to the government raid in 1881, is told from the perspective of a young girl who was living there. The author’s great-grandmother was living at Parihaka at that time, and the story is partially based on oral history. The story is an imaginary account of her great-grandmother’s experience.
